The activities in our Teachers’ Kit will help your students imagine what it was like to be a Norman charging across the battlefield, how it felt to be part of the Anglo-Saxon shield wall, or how the Norman cavalry helped them to victory.

Discovery Visits at Battle Abbey

Conquest Tour and Tales

Meet an Anglo-Saxon story-teller and hear tales of Norman power and English rebellion. Re-enact the battle on the battlefield, and learn how the dramatic events of 14 October 1066 had such an impact on England. Part of the session will take place outside, so please dress appropriately. Replica medieval weapons will be for viewing only and will be handled by the Discovery Visit leader. Students might like to make and bring their own cardboard shields with them for the battle. Availability: April – November Monday to Friday, November – 10 February Mondays and Fridays, 11 February – March Wednesday – Friday during term time. Sessions last for 1 hour. £100 per session.

1066 Battlefield GCSE Tour

Book an expert-led GCSE tour of the 1066 battlefield to give your students a more in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Battle of Hastings. On this interactive walking tour of the site, you will cover the causes of the Norman invasion, military equipment, tactics and technology, and the ways in which the Normans established and maintained control following their victory. Availability: April – November Monday to Friday – 10 February Mondays and Fridays, 11 February – March Wednesday – Friday during term time. Sessions last for 1 hour 30 mins. £100 per session.

You can bring your class to any of our sites entirely free of charge. We offer free entry to pre-booked schools, as well as free planning visits to help you make the most out of your day. Use our free downloadable resources to help with your planning and risk assessment.

EXPERT-LED WORKSHOPS

Award-winning and immersive Discovery Visits are available at selected sites from just £100 per session per class. Students of all ages and abilities can meet characters from the past, role-play or handle intriguing objects.
