Founded in 1278, Buckland Abbey was a thriving Cistercian Monastery until the Dissolution, when it entered the next phase of its life as a family residence. Passing between the Grenville and Drake families, it became a Tudor ‘grand design’, and was altered many times by its inhabitants as they made it their home. Today, the Abbey is part museum, part house, rich in history, stories and treasures.

A typical school visit to Buckland Abbey would involve a tour of the house with one of their brilliant school guides, which can be tailored to the area of study, and an activity such as replica artefact handling or a costume talk with the opportunity to dress up like a Tudor. Groups are also welcome to come and do self led tours, for which they can provide an information pack. They can sometimes offer outdoor activities with our Ranger team too.
