Dover Castle – English Heritage

Castle Hill, Dover, CT16 1HU. England

Enjoy a visit to Dover Castle and experience 2000 years of history. Start at the Roman lighthouse, then explore The Great Tower to learn more about Henry II. Descend into the Medieval tunnels on the way to the atmospheric Secret Wartime Tunnels. Find out more about WWI and the role of the WWI Fire Command Post by using our handling box, full of artefacts and activities and book the education room to dress up and imagine what life would have been like as a medieval lady or knight.

Discovery Visits at Dover Caslte

Knights, Feasts & Garderobes

What was life like for the lords and ladies who lived at the Castle and for those who served them? Find out on an interactive tour of the Great Tower at Dover Castle including lessons on courtly language and behaviour, role play and object handling. Availability: November and March: Thursday, April to October: Tuesdays during term time. Sessions last for 1 hour.

Secret Codes and Ciphers

The castle played an important role in WWII, in the planning of ‘Operation Dynamo’, the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940 and also became a top secret HQ. Find out more about the work carried out inside the Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle by breaking codes and helping to complete a secret mission. Availability: March to November: Thursdays during term time. Sessions last 1 hour.

FREE SELF-LED VISITS

You can bring your class to any of our sites entirely free of charge. We offer free entry to pre-booked schools, as well as free planning visits to help you make the most out of your day. Use our free downloadable resources to help with your planning and risk assessment.

EXPERT-LED WORKSHOPS

Award-winning and immersive Discovery Visits are available at selected sites from just £100 per session per class. Students of all ages and abilities can meet characters from the past, role-play or handle intriguing objects.
