Discovery Visits at Kenwood House
Kenwood Connections
This workshop focuses on the transatlantic slave trade and the development of the abolitionist movement through the lens of two of Kenwood’s key residents – Lord Mansfield and Dido Belle. Students will put their ideas in context and have informed discussions about the significant individuals and groups involved in this moment in history.
Availability: Tuesdays. Sessions last for 1.75 hours.
Keeping House: Kenwood above and below stairs
Students explore the history of Kenwood and the lives of the Mansfield family in Georgian times. They will pretend to be servants, looking at the scale of the house and the symbols in the decoration, before going ‘below stairs’ to get hands-on with the day-to-day activities in the Old Kitchen.
Availability: Tuesdays. Sessions last for 1.5 hours.
Face to Face
Students will learn about the purpose, form and content of portraits and self-portraits as well as the powerful use of symbolism. Students can dress up on costumes to recreate a painting, look at the work of Rembrandt, Reynolds and other masters to analyse the techniques used by artists to tell a story to create their own self-portraits.
