Each year Kids in Museums invites children and young people from ages 0-25 to take over adults’ jobs for the day at museums, galleries, historic homes, or heritage sites across the UK. Takeover Day gives children a unique experience behind-the-scenes at a museum, learning about their local heritage, boosting their confidence, and gaining transferable work skills. And, of course, it’s great fun!
On Takeover Day, young people can become tour guides, welcome hosts, curators, shop assistants, cleaners, press officers, and even more! They could co-curate a display or exhibition, help design new resources or events for other young people, create merchandise for the shop, give feedback or take over a museum’s social media channels. Takeover Day is totally flexible to your needs: it could be part of a longer-term project, a half or a full day out. It could involve a few pupils, a whole class, or even a whole school. Contact your local museum to see how you can get involved using the linked template letter from Kids in Museums. Kids in Museums provides free guidance and materials for museums, including free stickers, posters, and certificates for your pupils.
Don’t forget, if you are looking for help with funding the cost of your trip, you can apply for a bursary!
