Discover the stories of silk in this fascinating Silk Museum, alongside fashion, textiles, patterns and design. Their Paradise Mill features working Jacquard silk handlooms in their original setting, and tours show the expertise and creative skills involved in silk production. A school visit to the Silk Museum will complement and enhance classroom-based learning. Children get the opportunity to handle artefacts, express their creativity through a craft session and interact with one of their costumed interpreters.

Costs are £11 per pupil.

Victorian Experience

This visit covers all areas of Victorian life – work, school and home. Children dress up before heading to work in the mill. They get creative in a rag rug making workshop. In the object handling session they explore home and school life with costumed interpreters.

Silk Industry

On this visit, students will tour Paradise Mill and find out about working conditions for Macclesfield mill workers. An object handling session explores the process of silk production further and the equipment used. Children so some weaving in the classroom and can take their small woven material home.

Ancient Egypt

Who was Marianne Brocklehurst? How did Macclesfield come to have an Ancient Egyptian collection? On this visit, children will make an Anubis headdress, play games with replica artefacts and tour the exhibition with a costumed interpreter.
