Chester House Estate is a nationally significant heritage site, being one of the few places in the country which can demonstrate over 10,000 years of human activity.
in additions to being the site of a Roman small town, it is also home to The Northamptonshire Archaeological Resource Centre (ARC). The ARC is a state-of-the-art facility that acts as the publicly accessible archaeological archie store for the county.
Schools have access to their onsite museum, dedicated learning centre and play area.
School and other formal learning group visits are available during term time, providing opportunities for students to engage with the history, heritage and geography of the Chester House Estate.

A typical school visit at Chester House
A typical school visit includes:
An interactive enquiry-based workshop session of your choice, in which students will interrogate original and replica objects to develop an understanding of the lives of the people who used to live in the Nene Valley, why they settled here and how the landscape shaped the way they lived.
A guided tour around their wider site, providing opportunity for students to delve deeper into the history of the Chester House Estate and an understanding of how the site was used as a settlement throughout history.
Self-guided time which allows groups to explore their exhibitions and shop at their own pace or to burn off some energy in our play area.
A 30-minute slot in our lunchroom.
A visit usually lasts for 4 hours and upon booking you will be allocated an arrival and departure time.

How do we know about the past?
In June/ July we suspend their normal programme and offer Irchester Fields School – the opportunity to engage with live archaeological excavation. In addition to a tour of the excavation, learners will be guided by staff from ULAS (University of Leicester Archaeology Services) through some of the jobs of an archaeologist, including object identification and finds washing.
