The Swiss Garden at Shuttleworth is the only surviving complete example of a Regency ornamental garden – designed at a time when the fashion was for gardens to be a piece of theatre, every corner turned presents a different vista, folly or tableaux. The theatrical composition of the Swiss Garden’s Regency design enables activities to be split into distinct chapters/scenes and is key to contextualising and drawing relevance to learning. All their programmes are led, and include activities, object handling (original and replica) and trails. All schools visits are (subject to weather and serviceability) given a ride on one of their 100 year old buses – a superbly visceral experience that contextualises and draws relevance to their learning.
Cost: £6.50 per pupil – inclusive of all activities and guides, the exclusive use of their Garden Room as a base room and a trip for your children on the Collection’s 1913 Wellingborough double decker bus (subject to weather and serviceability).
As part of the GBST, The Swiss Gardens is offering a free afternoon at The Shuttleworth Collection (normally £4) when you book a trip to the The Swiss Gardens.
