The most modern and spine-chilling of English Heritage’s properties, the York Cold War Bunker uncovers the secret history of Britain’s Cold War. Enter the blast-proof doors and investigate the more unusual side of York’s heritage. Discover the semi-subterranean bunker which acted as a nerve centre during the Cold War to monitor nuclear fallout in Yorkshire from 1961 until 1991 in the event of a nuclear attack.

Explore one of the best surviving nuclear bunkers in England, a time capsule of the 1960s through to the 1990s, and examine the nuclear arms race. Why did the Cold War emerge? What was the role of the Royal Observation Corps in York’s bunker? Through an expert-led tour, object handling and original audio-visual footage, students will develop a greater understanding of life inside and outside the bunker during this potentially devastating era. An essential visit for GCSE Modern World History!

Availability: April to October: Monday and Tuesday during term time. Sessions last for 1.5 hours.

EXPERT-LED WORKSHOPS

Award-winning and immersive Discovery Visits are available at selected sites from just £100 per session per class. Students of all ages and abilities can meet characters from the past, role-play or handle intriguing objects.
